The Lebanon Fire District provides training to all full-time and volunteer personnel. The district receives accreditation through the Department of Public Safety and Standards of Training (DPSST). DPSST requires that members maintain 60 hours annually to maintain their levels of certification. The District’s Division Chief of Training ensures that all members are provided the necessary training and tracking for recertification. The District provides training in the areas of fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials response, emergency medical care, and technical rescue.

Candidates looking for full-time employment for the district are required to complete the NFPA Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials awareness & operations, Driver/Operator and hold a minimum of the State of Oregon EMT status before they can apply for a firefighter position. Additional requirements include the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and a National Testing Network fireteam passing test score.

New volunteer firefighters are required to complete a fire academy meeting the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter I standards. Once the new volunteers complete the academy, they are able to respond to emergencies and attend weekly training. Firefighter I academies are conducted twice a year with one being held in spring and the other in the fall. The new volunteer firefighters will also complete hazardous materials awareness and operations training. Once the members obtain those certifications they will be trained as Wildland firefighters and Emergency Medical Responders.

Volunteer firefighters meet weekly on Thursday nights for their continuing training. This night is called “Drill Night” and generally runs from 7pm to 10pm. Volunteer firefighters are encouraged to become fire engine, water tender, and ladder truck operators. Senior volunteer members can also train to become company officers. Company officers assigned to each station provide or assist with training. The District also provides training for our support volunteers. Support volunteer roles include emotional and practical support, Firefighter Rehab support, EMS only, and Tender Operators. Support volunteer training is conducted on the third Thursday of every month.

The College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest partners with the Fire District for their Career Service Learning pathway (CSL) to provide volunteer hours to our community. The District will train medical students to the level of entry level firefighters. The medical students are then able to respond to emergencies and work as a member of the crew in a firefighter role. An academy is completed annually in August for students interested in joining the Western University. Lebanon Fire. Emergency. Alliance (WLEA) program.

Members seeking emergency medical service (EMS) certification can obtain that training through regional colleges. Volunteer members can have their EMT class reimbursed by the district upon passing their class. Paramedics and EMTs must maintain their status by meeting the Oregon Health Authorities requirements for recertification every two years. In-house EMS training is provided.
