SMOKE ALARMS

During a fire you may have less than three minutes to escape your home. Working smoke alarms can alert you to the danger and give you and your family time to get out of your home.

The Lebanon Fire District is currently operating a program in conjunction with the Office of the Oregon State Fire Marshal to provide smoke alarms to homeowners at no cost. For more information contact the Fire & Life Safety Division at 541-451-1901.

Oregon law requires landlords to provide smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms for their tenants and tenants are responsible for maintaining the alarms in working condition.

Installation Guidelines

Smoke alarms should be installed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. If you are physically unable to install a smoke alarm, contact the Lebanon Fire District for assistance.

Lebanon Fire District recommendations for smoke alarm installations are:

  • In each bedroom

  • Outside bedrooms within 21 feet of all bedroom doors

  • On each level of the home including basements

Smoke alarms should not be installed in bathrooms, garages, kitchens and unheated areas where cooking vapors, frost, exhaust, moisture or steam can cause nuisance alarms.

CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) ALARMS

If a home has a CO source, CO alarms are required before it can be sold. Effective April 1, 2011, sellers of one- and two-family dwellings, manufactured dwellings, or multifamily housing containing a CO source must have one or more properly functioning CO alarms before conveying fee title or transferring possession of a dwelling. Homes built during or after 2011 require a CO alarm regardless of the presence of a CO source.

A CO source is defined by OAR 837-047-0110 as "A heater, fireplace, appliance (e.g., furnace, dryer, or water heater), or cooking source (e.g.., stove, oven) that uses coal, kerosene, petroleum products, wood, or other fuels (e.g., oil or natural gas) that emit CO as a by-product of combustion; or an attached garage with an opening that communicates directly with a living space."

Where To Install CO Alarms

  • Install CO alarms on each level of your home with bedrooms (sleeping areas).
  • A CO alarm must be located within each bedroom or within 15 feet outside of each bedroom door. Bedrooms on separate floors in a structure containing two or more stories require separate CO alarms.
  • All CO alarms must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's recommended instructions.
